Including some very strange facts about Blue Planet<\/span> Aquarium\u2019s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inhabitants that might be difficult to get your head around<\/span>!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that in mind, here\u2019s our selection of 10 weird and wonderful facts about <\/span>Blue Planet Aquarium\u2019s animal residents!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blue Planet Fact: 1<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Sand tiger sharks are pregnant for nine months<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>We couldn\u2019t have a list of wonderful facts about Blue Planet Aquarium\u2019s animals without mentioning the largest of the lot! <a href=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/bpa\/sharks\/sharks-of-blue-planet-sand-tiger-sharks\/\">Sand Tiger Sharks<\/a> are pregnant for 9 months, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/pregnancy\/pregnancy-month-by-month\/what-happens-ninth-month-pregnancy#:~:text=The%20growing%20fetus%20places%20more,varicose%20veins%2C%20and%20stretch%20marks.\">j<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ust like humans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! That\u2019s a long time compared to many other animals, both in the sea and on land.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, very much UNLIKE humans, these unborn sand tiger pups will eat their own siblings in the womb. Yep, that makes them cannibals. Gross.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It gets even grosser. Once they\u2019re full up with their brothers and sisters, they sometimes eat their mother\u2019s unfertilised eggs as well.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk about hungry. And awkward.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blue Planet Fact: 2<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Cichlids carry their eggs in their mouths<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/bpa\/discover\/animals\/malawi-cichlids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cichlids<\/a> are among the most loving and caring parents in the ocean<\/span>. Sh<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">owing a huge commitment to protecting their unborn children. Instead of placing their eggs in nests, cichlids carry the eggs around in their mouths \u2013 better safe than sorry!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This behaviour is known as \u201cmouthbrooding\u201d <\/span>it\u2019s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also found in several other fish species, including catfish. And, although it is very rare among cichlids, some of them are even paternal mouthbrooders<\/span>. W<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hich means that the dads are the ones who carry the eggs for the mums!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blue Planet Fact: 3<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Goliath groupers have teeth but don\u2019t use them<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goliath groupers must be in a rush or very impatient because they just swallow their prey whole<\/span>. W<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ithout chewing, even though they have teeth. Can you imagine doing that? Definitely don\u2019t try it at home, or anywhere else!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But don\u2019t worry: they\u2019re designed to be able to do this (unlike us!). A goliath grouper\u2019s mouth is extremely large<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They use it to generate negative pressure that sucks the prey in quickly. Yep, kind of like a vacuum cleaner.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blue Planet Fact: 4<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>A large pelican can hold more than 11 litres of water in its bill<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you thought <a href=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/bpa\/discover\/animals\/dalmatian-pelican\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pelicans <\/a>use their bills to catch fish, you\u2019d be right! They don\u2019t store fish in there once caught, though \u2013 they just swallow the fish immediately. That doesn\u2019t sound too comfy to us, but it\u2019s how they do it.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other main use of the bill is to store water \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of water. Imagine a can of Coke or Fanta. The capacity of a fully grown pelican\u2019s bill is more than 30 of those!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blue Planet Fact: 5<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Mud turtles hibernate in\u2026<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 Yep, you\u2019ve probably guessed it\u2026<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mud!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These creatures are omnivorous, meaning they\u2019re not fussy about whether they <\/span>eat<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> animals or plants<\/span>. B<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ut<\/span>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they sometimes find that their habitats dry up in terms of food sources.\u00a0When this happens, the mud turtle will either leave their current habitat in search of a new one<\/span>. Alternatively, it<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will burrow into the mud and hibernate<\/span>. L<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iving in a state of dormancy for several months<\/span>. S<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aving their energy up until they can emerge and flourish again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blue Planet Fact: 6<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Female blacktip sharks can become pregnant without male help<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How incredible is that?!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blacktip sharks are capable of fertilising eggs by themselves<\/span>! T<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his process is known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpls.2019.00128\/full#:~:text=Parthenogenesis%20is%20the%20spontaneous%20development,of%20plant%20and%20animal%20species.\">parthenogenesis<\/a>.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We should point out, however, that it is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uncommon for this to happen. Scientists have only found evidence of this twice during many years of DNA testing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blue Planet Fact: 7<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Desert vipers have three techniques for locating prey<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When hunting for food, a desert viper can take three different approaches<\/span>. Firstly, <b>Vibration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 sensing the vibrations of movement on the ground<\/span>. Next, <b>Body heat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 reading heat signatures to find hotspots and thereby find prey<\/span>. Finally, <b>Eyesight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 as you can easily imagine, just by looking around<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the fact that their venom contains 13 different toxins<\/span>. As well as<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their colour<\/span>ation<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> matches their natural environments<\/span>. As a result,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they can ambush and immobilise their prey easily. On the whole, it<\/span>\u2018s no <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wonder they\u2019re such efficient predators!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blue Planet Fact: 8<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>A red-bellied piranha\u2019s bite can be stronger than a great white shark\u2019s!<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are talking pound for pound here, of course<\/span>. B<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ut, it\u2019s still impressive that something so small can match the ferocity of one of the world\u2019s most feared predators!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<\/span>n fact,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> did you know that their teeth are interlocking? So when they chomp down with those razor-sharp gnashers, that\u2019s what makes their bites so devastating to prey.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then again, don\u2019t believe the myths: a pack of piranhas can\u2019t strip an animal down to its skeleton in just a few seconds. That\u2019s just silly movie and cartoon stuff!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blue Planet Fact: 9<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Electric eels navigate using their charge<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You probably already knew that <a href=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/bpa\/discover\/animals\/electric-eel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electric eels <\/a>emit strong charges to defend themselves and stun their prey<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> However, did you know that they also use their electricity to navigate around?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have to because their eyesight is pretty dreadful! So they emit low-power charges that act as a kind of built-in radar system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blue Planet Fact: 10<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Giant Pacific Octopuses have 3 hearts and 9 brains!<\/h3>\n<p>That\u2019s right, these amazing <a href=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/bpa\/sea-life\/giant-pacific-octopus\/\">masters of disguise<\/a> have some serious internal organs. With one heart for pumping blood around the body. The other two are just for pumping blood over their gills.
