But there are many, many things that make them different from each other. Confused about which category frogs fall into, or which of the two likes a dip in the water? We\u2019re here to help clear things up for you.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll explore their differences and delve into some frequently asked questions you might be wondering about the two below.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The similarities between amphibians and reptiles<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Before we get onto the differences, let\u2019s take a look at how amphibians and reptiles are alike.<\/p>\n<p>The main similarities are that they\u2019re both cold-blooded, and they\u2019re both vertebrates, which means they have backbones. They can both also both be found on every continent \u2013 except for Antarctica, it\u2019s a bit too cold for them there!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are amphibians?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Amphibians are four-limbed vertebrates which belong to the class (a biological classification) <em>Amphibia<\/em>. They live in a variety of different habitats, including land, trees, water and even underground \u2013 though they never stray too far from water so that can stay moist.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>What are some characteristics of amphibians?<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the things we can see: their appearance. Amphibians\u2019 skin tends to be moist, which stops them from drying up. A lot of amphibians have smooth skin, though many toads are covered with raised glands, which make them bumpy, and are used to produce toxic secretions \u2013 this protects them from any sneaky predators looking for food.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-100663\" src=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/tadpole.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/tadpole.png 680w, https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/tadpole-300x169-1.png 300w\" alt=\"tadpole\" width=\"680\" height=\"382\" \/><\/figure>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Their home<\/h5>\n<p>When they first hatch as aquatic larvae, they use their gills to breathe underwater. As they get older, they undergo a metamorphosis, developing four legs and lungs, and beginning to spend more time on land. Take frogs, for example. They begin life as tadpoles, before developing legs so they can walk around on land.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Their skin<\/h5>\n<p>They can also breathe through their moist skin, which is described as porous \u2013 a word that means having tiny holes that let liquid (or in this case, air) pass through. This makes them very sensitive to toxins in their environment. So, if you see amphibians happily swimming around in water, then it\u2019s an indication that it\u2019s a suitable home for them \u2013 if you don\u2019t, then the water is more than likely going to be harmful to them.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Their tongues and eyes<\/h5>\n<p>The tongues of amphibians are different from reptiles\u2019 too. Most amphibians grow an entire tongue, and it\u2019ll usually be very sticky so they can easily grab hold of nearby prey.<\/p>\n<p>Their eyes work differently as well. Since they live on land and in the water, their eyes have evolved to work just as well in dry and wet environments, although they can only see certain colours. They can at least identify certain shades in low light, but for the most part they generally only see in black, white and grey.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Their eggs<\/h5>\n<p>Amphibians\u2019 eggs are jelly-like and full of gooey mucus, with a membrane on their outer layer allowing water and gas to pass through them. Weave your way around the plant life of the <a href=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/discover\/exhibits\/temple-of-frogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Temple of Frogs<\/a> and you\u2019ll come across plenty of different creatures, including the cute <a href=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/discover\/animals\/golden-mantella\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Golden Mantella<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/discover\/animals\/borneo-eared-tree-frogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Borneo Eared Treed Frog<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/discover\/animals\/whites-tree-frog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">White\u2019s Tree Frog<\/a> and the well-hidden <a href=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/discover\/animals\/green-and-black-poison-dart-frog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green and Black Poison Dart Frog<\/a>. You\u2019ll even be able to spot the <a href=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/discover\/animals\/barred-tiger-salamander\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barred Tiger Salamander<\/a> and some Axolotls too!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are reptiles?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Reptiles are animals which belong to the class <em>Reptilia<\/em> that have four limbs, or in the case of snakes, are descended from four-limbed ancestors.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-100665\" src=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/crocodile.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/crocodile.png 680w, https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/crocodile-300x169-1.png 300w\" alt=\"crocodiles\" width=\"680\" height=\"382\" \/><\/figure>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are some characteristics of reptiles?<\/h4>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Their home<\/h5>\n<p>While some reptiles will spend time in water here and there, they do not have an aquatic stage of their life cycle, preferring instead to live most of their lives on land. Even the crocodile, who spends most of its day in the water, will still nest and rest on land.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Their skin<\/h5>\n<p>While an amphibian\u2019s skin leaves them open to harmful pollutants and other toxins found in water, on land and even in the air, reptiles have no such problems. Their hard, watertight scales keep them well-protected. And while reptiles can\u2019t secrete mucus through their skin, many of them have the ability to deliver toxins through their fangs when attacking.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Their tongues and eyes<\/h5>\n<p>Although some reptiles have sticky tongues in the same way amphibians do, many of them have a split tongue which they can use to smell and detect prey \u2013 these are most common in lizards and snakes. However, chameleons are one example of a reptile with a sticky tongue. The mucus on their tongue is said to be around 400 times thicker than human saliva, which gives their prey very little chance of escape!<\/p>\n<p>Compared to amphibians, reptile eyes are a lot more well-developed. This is down to the fact that they\u2019ve adapted to live on land, so their eyes can view a much broader range of colours \u2013 although they aren\u2019t quite as effective in water. Also, reptiles who are nocturnal evolve vertical pupils while those diurnal reptiles \u2013 those who go about during the day \u2013 develop round pupils.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-100666\" src=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/reptile-eggs.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/reptile-eggs.png 680w, https:\/\/neuronicdev.es\/deep-sea-world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/reptile-eggs-300x169-1.png 300w\" alt=\"reptile eggs\" width=\"680\" height=\"382\" \/><\/figure>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Their eggs<\/h5>\n<p>Reptilian eggs lay what are known as amniotic eggs. These eggs have a brittle or leathery shell and are closer to a chicken\u2019s egg in appearance. When they hatch, the hatchlings look like miniature versions of their parents, too! The hatchlings of amphibians don\u2019t tend to resemble what they\u2019ll grow into \u2013 again, think of what a tadpole looks like at birth, and then think of the frog they\u2019ll become in the future. They don\u2019t look at all similar, do they?<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lists of reptiles<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Some common examples of reptiles include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Snakes<\/li>\n<li>Lizards (including geckos and chameleons)<\/li>\n<li>Crocodiles and alligators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fun reptile facts<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A snake\u2019s scales are made of keratin \u2013 the same thing our hair and fingernails are made of<\/li>\n<li>Some species of gecko can detach their tails as a defence mechanism. When a predator grabs the tail, the gecko drops it so it can run away!<\/li>\n<li>Reptiles don\u2019t have sweat glands of any kind<\/li>\n<li>Reptiles shed their skin in different ways.
