Harbour seals are a native species in Scottish waters, which is why we believe it\u2019s so important to educate our visitors on everything from their habitats and diets to the ways that everyone can help the local wild populations thrive.<\/p>\n Why did the whale cross the ocean? It was her life\u2019s porpoise!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n What do sharks need to stay healthy? Vitamin sea!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Sharks are a prehistoric species from over 400 million years ago. As the apex predator, they\u2019re at the top of the food chain and eat almost anything, although many feed mostly on smaller sea creatures. At Deep Sea World, we\u2019re home to several shark species, including the lesser spotted catshark<\/a> and sand tiger shark<\/a>.<\/p>\n Whose job is it to clean up the <\/em><\/strong>ocean<\/em><\/strong><\/a>? The mer-maids!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Which haircut did the fish ask for? A <\/em><\/strong>mullet<\/em><\/strong><\/a>!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Mullets are a family of fish whose name has nothing to do with the popular \u201880s hairdo. In reality, they\u2019ve been around much longer \u2013 with research suggesting they\u2019ve been swimming in our oceans for thousands of years!<\/p>\n Which game show is a fan-favourite for sea creatures? Whale of fortune!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Why did the lobster blush? Because the sea-weed!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Ready for a fun fact? Something you might not know is that European lobsters<\/a>, like many other lobster species, are naturally more blue than red. The reason we associate red with lobster isn\u2019t such a fun fact, though, since it\u2019s because they turn red when they\u2019re cooked. When they\u2019re alive, their claws and whiskers are often pink.<\/p>\n Did you hear about the ocean that threw a party? It was fin-tastic!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Why did the <\/em><\/strong>coral<\/em><\/strong><\/a> reef laugh? Because it saw a <\/em><\/strong>clownfish<\/em><\/strong><\/a>!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Did you know that clownfish and coral have a special relationship? They protect themselves by living in anemones, which release a toxic substance from their tentacles when any other sea creature touches it. Clownfish have developed an immunity to these toxins since they have a layer of protective mucus covering their bodies. This means they can pass through the tentacles without injury, allowing them to protect themselves from other fish within these habitats. Pretty clever, huh!<\/p>\n How do fish end a conversation? They say \u2018sea you later\u2019!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n What did the letter B say during summer? \u2018I do love to be beside the C\u2019!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n How do fish avoid getting seasick? They drink a p-ocean!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n How do you make an octopus laugh? Give it ten-tickles!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n How do you cut the ocean in half?
